Ohio Magazine Guidelines for Writers
Ohio Magazine publishes stories that celebrate Ohio – its people, its rich culture and heritage, and especially its travel spots. Our audience is educated, active, affluent and very loyal to Ohio. We know they expect the best. Because our readership is drawn from the entire state, each of our stories must possess a statewide appeal.

Features

Feature stories in Ohio Magazine should meet all the above criteria. Typically, our feature well contains stories about interesting Ohioans, top travel destinations, Ohio’s arts and cultural institutions, as well as trend pieces and service pieces that provide readers with a statewide set of options on a particular topic. All features should have the potential for wonderful art to accompany it, so the story has a strong visual impact on our readers.

Profile pieces typically focus on an individual who can claim an impact – large or small – on the entire state, or whose actions would be of interest to our statewide audience.

Trend stories can vary greatly, ranging from home decorating, gardening and food to arts and entertainment. But all must be proven emerging trends in our back yard.

Travel

Ohio Magazine is dedicated to bringing our readers the best travel information in the state – where to go, what to do and what to see all over our great state. Each month, Ohio Magazine dedicates a large portion of its pages to covering travel destinations in the state. Ohio Magazine readers are interested in discovering new inns and B&Bs in which to stay, finding off-the-beaten-path destinations where they can immerse themselves in local culture, and exploring excellent outdoor parks and recreation areas where they can relax and play. Almost every story provides readers with an itinerary that includes a place to stay, highlights a mixed variety of things to do and suggests local venues for dining and shopping. The keys to the success of any travel pitch are the words "local" and "unique". We have files filled with information about museums and major attractions in every area of the state – we rely on contributors to tell us what's new, unique or different about each destination.

The travel section of Ohio contains a number of running features. Main Street stories profile a small town in Ohio that has big appeal. Typically, these are charming, old-fashioned downtown streetscapes where a reader could spend a day shopping, eating and perhaps taking in a local museum or attraction. Weekend pieces provide readers with just that, an itinerary for an entire weekend in one location, complete with a locally owned inn or B&B, a series of options for what to do that include both well-known and not-so-well-known local attractions, and suggestions on the best locally owned restaurants. Borderland departments cover a destination just outside Ohio. Destination stories explore one specific destination – a new museum, a historic site or a place worth visiting for a day or an overnight trip. These are all places that an Ohioan could drive to with ease, and have the same appeal described in the sections above.

Ohio Magazine constantly seeks to widen its pool of assignment and stock photographers from around the state. We are particularly interested in photographers from the northwest, southwest and southeast regions of Ohio.

Send non-returnable samples of your work along with any proposed photo idea(s) to Lesley Blake, Art Director, 1422 Euclid Ave. Suite 730, Cleveland, 44115. If you have an electronic portfolio, e-mail a few examples to the attention of
lblake@ohiomagazine.com. If you’re on the Web, even better. Point us in the direction of your site. Telephone queries are discouraged.

Please remember that our editorial calendar is established three to six months in advance. For queries related to a timely event or seasonal events, allow nine month’s to a year’s notice. If we’re interested in your work, we’ll contact you to discuss a potential assignment.

Payment

For writers and photographers, we pay on publication, buy first-time rights (and, sometimes, electronic rights), but may reassign second serial (reprint) or one-time rights.
